Attention writers, poets, persons of letters
and literati: Loose Change magazine, A Literary Magazine by WonderRoot,
is excited to announce our first-ever writing contest series, awarding
cash prizes in poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Contests will be judged by
the Loose Change genre editors and our esteemed guest editors, composed of
noted local writers representing each of the respective contest genres.

Funded by the success of our Power2Give fundraiser, all prize-winners will
also be published in Loose Change magazine’s first print anthology, to
debut in early 2014. The contest and awards are among the first
initiatives launched under Loose Change’s plan for growth and expansion as
it moves towards its first print anthology. Awarding writers with both
prizes and print publication will connect more writers to the magazine,
and turn more much-deserved attention to the winners and fellow published
writers.

Grand-prize winners in each genre will be awarded $125, second-place
winners will receive $75, and third-place winners, $50. Poetry contest
submissions will be accepted through our current, Fall-issue, all-call
deadline of August 15, 2013 (poetry already submitted for this cycle will
also be considered). Prose submissions will be accepted through November
15. Poetry contest winners will be featured in the Fall issue, while both
Fiction and Non-Fiction winners will appear in the Winter issue.

All contest entries must be submitted online at
www.loosechangemagazine.org/submit. Contest winners will be notified by
email prior to publication.

Advance thanks and best of luck to all our submitters!
Three Exhibitions
OCAF Art Center, 1902 Building, 34 School Street, Watkinsville, GA 30677

Free admission and open to the general public

Main Gallery – “Participating Potters:2013” - This annual exhibit, featuring the best works of each of the 50 Georgia potters and a very special piece selected from their private collections; this annual exhibit is considered by many as the finest display of contemporary pottery in the southeast.

Members Gallery – “Made in Japan” - This exhibition, curated by Rick Berman, will include approximately 35 pots from kilns in Japan. Living National Treasures Shoji Hamada and Tatsuzo Shimaoka will be shown. Kumano Kuroemon and several other potters from Echizen, examples from the kilns of Shino and Oribe, Bizen, Tamba, Onda, and many other pots from anonymous Japanese potters from private and museum collections will be included. Several large photographs of Japanese potters, kilns, pots, Zen Gardens, and a very thorough explanation of the Mingei Tradition will be shown on the walls of the gallery. Berman will give a Gallery Talk on this significant exhibit on Friday evening, August 30, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Members Gallery.

Hall Gallery – “Rick Berman – Italian Influences” – An exhibit of clay art by potter Rick Berman. “Fortunately I was given the opportunity to teach ceramics for the University of Georgia’s Crotona studies abroad program in the spring of 2013. While living in Crotona, Italy and traveling to Rome, Florence, Lucca, Venice, Assisi and several other Italian cities I saw literally thousands of pieces of art by some of the greatest masters in the history of the world. I noticed that a common denominator used in almost every painting and marble or wood sculpture was the use of draped fabric. To me the greatest example of this common thread was the incredible use of this technique in Michelangelo’s pietà. I was so amazed by this illusion created in marble that I felt compelled to try it in clay. In my forty five years of clay work I have never been so pleased with the forms, and the seemingly endless possibilities of variations on a theme. Ironically I made a few of these forms as a graduate student in the Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia in 1973.”

Details of the "Made in Japan" exhibit in the Members Gallery, curated by Rick Berman, will showcase Japanese pottery from the kilns of Japan. The Exhibit in the 1902 OCAF Center Hallway Gallery will feature the most recent pottery of Atlanta clay artist and potter Rick Berman, titled "Rick Berman - Italian Influences".

Meet and mingle with this year’s participating potters while enjoying a wide assortment of tasty finger foods and liquid refreshments under the tents adjacent to the Memorial Sculpture Garden. Music on the outdoor stage will be provided by the well-known jazz band Squat. This immensely popular jazz band has won the annual Flagpole Athens Music “best jazz band” award five times since 1999. The Gala Reception and Preview Sales are open to the general public. Admission to the Gala Reception and Preview Sale is $10; plenty of ample free parking is available.www.ArtsAcrossGA.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00144119094063542802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227243218043894636.post-58907767809736200822013-07-31T17:20:00.000-04:002013-08-02T09:05:47.983-04:00FAACE Member Update: Aug. 6th Meeting and Dogwood Gallery Art ShowMeeting: Change of venue. We will NOT be meeting at Dogwood Gallery. We will be meeting at our usual place, St. Andrews in the Pines, 7 p.m., Tues.
Many "assume" that their home owners insurance will cover their art, their studio, their students... That isn't necessarily true. If someone stops by your house to look at your paintings and has a fall, will insurance cover the accident? what happens if they sue? When they tell the insurance company they came by to purchase something from you as an artist, will your insurance company deny the claim and say they don't cover a business?

What happens if you're at a show and a shelf falls on a visitor? what happens if lightening strikes your studio and you lose not only your irreplaceable work, but all your tools, paints, glazes, etc.?

Should you get a rider on your homeowners insurance or get separate business insurance?

In addition to discussing insurance needs we'll be sharing information on a few upcoming shows the club will either be participating in or be responsible for.

We meet the first Tuesday of each month at the Towne Club Center in Peachtree City. 7 p.m. For more info, or to find out how to join, visit www.FAACE.org.

Hope to see you there! Question: How do I know when it's time to make my craft business into a legal entity?
Answer: This is one of the most common questions I get from small business owners and I always give the same answer: If you are making and selling products, you want to be sure, from the outset, that you are running your business in accordance with your state's laws.
We weren't sure what the attendance might be given the new location, but it was very good... We were able to sell, sell, sell and talk, talk, talk. Plus, and this is very important, we raised money to support The Children's Village at Christian City.

Given the fact that we put this show together in under a month it was especially sweet... lots of giving people, great artists, wonderful support from the media and all of our friends and supporters. Special thanks to the Harvest Community Center for their support --- they donated the use of their building (the original Fayetteville theater from way back when). They cleaned up after us, too!

Andrea Boswell, potter extraordinaire, decided the night before the show to put together some pottery packages. She donated the packages to be sold to benefit The Children's Village. 100% of the money from their sale went into the bowl for the Village. Artists are such generous people, aren't they? A large number of artists at the show donated a portion of their sales to the cause, too.

We're going to make this an annual event, expect next year to be even bigger and better (we'll have more than a month to work on it!).

I'm working on a slide show of the art, will pop it on the blog later. I'm kind of in 'decompress' mode at the moment, always need a day after a show just to chill.

We're already working on two more shows so subscribe, follow, watch us!
